Two Victims Identified in the Ivy League School Incident as Law Enforcement Persist in Search for Perpetrator.

Two students who died in the weekend's tragic incident on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their killer carried on following the freeing by local law enforcement of the only individual detained in connection in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

The student Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was called “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, according to the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.

Cook was the vice-presidency of Brown’s division of the campus GOP group, as the club stated. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also posted words of sorrow online, saying in part: “It's indescribable. Keeping in mind her family and friends, particularly her mother and father.”

An International Student

The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the prestigious university, according to relatives.

His name was officially acknowledged by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He harbored grand aspirations of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and assisting patients,” his sibling Samira said in a memorial statement.

What Happened

An additional nine individuals were wounded in the weekend shooting in the engineering department of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.

Law enforcement reported by the end of Sunday that a man aged 24 taken into custody in a search at a lodging about around 27 kilometers from the campus earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“A perpetrator remains free,” said Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

Neronha explained, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you must reassess and head another way, and this is precisely what occurred over the last 24 hours or so.”

Public Fear

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “We know that this is likely to cause fresh anxiety for our city”.

The gunman discharged a weapon inside a lecture hall in the engineering facility on over the weekend, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm pistol, a police source told the media outlet.

Officers that searched the hotel found a pair of pistols and two ammunition clips when the suspect was detained, the news agency reported.

The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the group. “She was famed for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and other students,” he said.

An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the passing of Umurzokov in a message. “We extend our sincere condolences to Mr Umurzokov’s family, friends, and schoolmates and grieve for of his bright future.”

Broader Statistics

The fatal shooting at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US college with about 7,300 undergraduate and postgraduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 mass shootings recorded nationally so far in 2025, according to records. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
