Three Lions Coach Reveals The Approach: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

Ten years back, the England assistant coach featured at a lower division club. Today, he's dedicated on helping Thomas Tuchel win the World Cup in 2026. His journey from the pitch to the sidelines began with a voluntary role with the youth team. He remembers, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and it captivated him. He realized his purpose.

Staggering Ascent

His advancement is incredible. Starting as Paul Cook’s assistant, he established a name with creative training and strong interpersonal abilities. His roles at clubs included top European clubs, and he held coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include legends including world-class talents. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the peak in his words.

“All begins with a vision … But I’m a believer that passion overcomes challenges. You envision the goal then you break it down: ‘How can we achieve it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. We have to build a structured plan enabling us to have the best chance.”

Obsession with Details

Obsession, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours day and night, the coaching duo push hard at comfort zones. Their strategies involve psychological profiling, a strategy for high temperatures for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and building a true team. The coach highlights “Team England” and rejects terms like “international break”.

“It's not time off or a rest,” Barry notes. “We needed to create an environment where players are eager to join and they're pushed that going back is a relief.”

Ambitious Trainers

Barry describes himself and Tuchel as highly ambitious. “We want to dominate all parts of the match,” he states. “We strive to own the entire field and that’s what we spend long hours toward. Our responsibility not only to stay ahead of changes but to beat them and create our own ones. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And to simplify complexity.

“We have 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We need to execute an intricate approach that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it in that period. It’s to take it from idea to information to understanding to action.

“To develop a process that allows us to be productive in that window, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have since we took the job. During periods without the team, we have to build relationships among them. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, we need to watch them play, understand them, connect with them. Relying only on those 50 days, it's impossible.”

Upcoming Matches

He is getting ready ahead of the concluding matches of World Cup qualifiers – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. They've already ensured their place at the finals with six wins out of six without conceding a goal. However, they won't relax; instead. Now is the moment to reinforce the team’s identity, to maintain progress.

“We are both certain that the football philosophy ought to embody all the positives about the Premier League,” Barry explains. “The athleticism, the adaptability, the physicality, the honesty. The England jersey must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It must resemble a cloak and not body armour.

“For it to feel easy, we have to give them a style that allows them to play freely like they do every week, that feels natural and encourages attacking play. They should overthink less and more in doing.

“You can gain psychological edges available to trainers at both ends of the pitch – building from the defense, pressing from the front. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, it seems football is static, notably in domestic leagues. Everybody has so much information these days. They know how to set up – structured defenses. We are really trying to focus on accelerating the game in that central area.”

Passion for Progress

His desire for improvement is relentless. When he studied for his pro license, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, especially as his class featured big names including former players. To enhance his abilities, he went into the most challenging environments imaginable to improve his talks. Such as Walton jail locally, where he also took inmates for a training session.

He completed the course as the best in his year, and his dissertation – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied 16,154 throw-ins – was published. Lampard was among those convinced and he hired Barry on to his staff at Chelsea. When Frank was fired, it spoke volumes that the team dismissed nearly all assistants except Barry.

The next manager with the club became Tuchel, and shortly after, they claimed the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, the coach continued in the setup. Once Tuchel resurfaced at Munich, he recruited Barry of Chelsea to rejoin him. English football's governing body view them as a partnership like previous management pairs.
