The club's supporters described the day as “one of the most bittersweet days in our 158-year history” after the Championship side entered financial administration under owner Dejphon Chansiri with a 12-point penalty imposed.

The Owls are confronted with likely demotion after the league's punishment left them on -6 points, 15 points from safety. Players and staff have not been paid on time over recent months, adding to the period of turbulence.

Administrator Begbies Traynor have taken control of proceedings to sell Wednesday’s assets, along with the team's home ground, to recoup debts estimated at £1m in tax. Soon after the club entered administration, seats spelling out Chansiri were removed from the North Stand.

“Administration resulted from prolonged financial issues, a lack of accountability, and unsuccessful sale attempts,” the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust said. “This isn't a moment for celebration. Manager’s Perspective on Fresh Start

Sheffield Wednesday's coach, Henrik Pedersen met the administrators with team members and employees on Friday morning. Pedersen stated administration was required for a fresh start.

The manager emphasized “a sad situation can also still be a good day”, noting: “Recent months showed the situation was unsustainable. We need a fresh restart to use the potential of this fantastic club. Now optimism and hope for brighter days prevail. I envision a promising future for the club.”

Employee Concerns

Employees expressed emotion upon hearing the update, with Pedersen saying: “Uncertainty exists. Do we get our salary now? What happens now? Will things improve? Will it not be better? Overall, there's hope for a shared future with the club.”

Ongoing Financial Struggles

The situation at Wednesday worsened significantly in recent months after the former manager and players left due to salary delays. The league voiced worries regarding financial health in August.

Since then, the club have been living hand-to-mouth, applying all revenue such as solidarity payments to deal with debts. Facing potential closure orders from HMRC, it appears Chansiri ran out of options.

Insolvency Practitioner's Comments

A lead administrator, Kris Wigfield appointed by Begbies Traynor said: “Like many football clubs, [Wednesday] has been trading at a significant loss over multiple seasons, previously covered by the owner. Because of mounting money troubles, the owner opted for administration which will enable us to market the club and the stadium as a whole, a positive development for fans.”

Regulatory Response

The culture secretary, Lisa Nandy said Wednesday’s plight highlighted again of the need for the independent football regulator, recently legislated. It should be active for the start of the 2027-28 season.

“My club Wigan faced similar issues, I know everyone who loves the club will be hoping for a resolution as soon as possible,” she added.

Fan Response

Supporters have boycotted the club’s retail and merchandise this season and thousands stayed away from their home fixture against Middlesbrough in the latest boycott. Ahead of the Oxford game, the administrator and the supporters’ trust called on fans to reengage.

Future Prospects

The trust said it expected strong interest from buyers but had been working on a supporter-backed purchase plan guaranteeing “liquidation remains off the table”.

The manager, once an assistant, hasn't accepted demotion despite the severity of the challenge. “We have to be a new Sheffield Wednesday with an old heart, he said. We have a fantastic club and it deserves to grow. I have a big belief we can survive in the Championship with this group of players. We will keep fighting
