A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to the Australian Courts

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the early stage before exiting in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight before the Australian Open. Organizers noted that Williams is also entered to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in the city was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I’m excited to be back in the country and looking forward to playing during the summer season," Williams said. "I’ve had so many unforgettable moments there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to return to a place that has meant so much to my professional journey."

The tournament indicated that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to take part in an Open's singles competition, eclipsing the mark formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
