The City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride to Proceed During FIFA Tournament In Spite of Formal Protests from Egypt and Iran

Plans for Pride-focused events and activities in Seattle amid next summer’s World Cup are proceeding unabated, even after the Egyptian and Iranian football federations raised strong concerns regarding a planned “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy Alongside City Celebrations

Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “moving forward as planned” with Pride activities outside the stadium. These events will take place around the Group G fixture featuring Egypt and Iran on June 26th. Additionally, FIFA has a policy allowing Pride flags to be brought into the stadium.

“As the local organising committee, our role is to prepare our city to host the matches and oversee the fan activities outside of the match venue,” said the vice-president of communications.

Legal Background Behind the Formal Complaints

Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, and in Egypt, morality laws are frequently employed to prosecute LGBTQ+ people. The Egyptian federation stated it did not want to be associated with events that “directly contradict the social, religious and cultural values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” In a parallel move, the head of Iran's soccer body publicly registered “objections against the issue.”

FIFA's Stance Regarding Symbols

The international federation holds full authority of stadiums during games. Although its rules forbid banners and flags with political messages, it allows flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” which explicitly includes the Pride flag. This regulation was in effect at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reinforced following reports of flags being seized.

  • The Pride Match concept was devised to highlight the city's longstanding tradition of advocating for equality.
  • An artistic competition has been commissioned to create images celebrating the occasion.
  • Planners have pledged to making sure all fans feel welcome in the Pacific Northwest during the tournament.

The region is home to one of the nation’s most prominent communities of Iranian descent, a thriving Egyptian diaspora, and rich communities from every competing country. “We’re committed is to guaranteeing all residents and visitors encounter the hospitality, dignity, and respect that defines our region,” organizers concluded.
