Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced what is being described as the biggest changes to combat illegal migration "in recent history".

The new plan, modeled on the more rigorous system adopted by Denmark's centre-left government, makes refugee status conditional, limits the review procedure and includes entry restrictions on states that block returns.

Temporary Asylum Approvals

Those receiving refugee status in the UK will have permission to stay in the country temporarily, with their case evaluated biannually.

This signifies people could be repatriated to their native land if it is judged "stable".

This approach echoes the practice in the Scandinavian country, where protected persons get temporary residence documents and must submit new applications when they expire.

Officials says it has begun supporting people to go back to Syria willingly, following the overthrow of the Syrian government.

It will now begin considering forced returns to Syria and other countries where people have not typically been sent back to in recent years.

Protected individuals will also need to be settled in the UK for twenty years before they can request settled status - increased from the present 60 months.

Meanwhile, the administration will introduce a new "work and study" immigration pathway, and urge protected persons to find employment or start studying in order to switch onto this route and obtain permanent status sooner.

Exclusively persons on this work and study program will be able to support family members to accompany them in the UK.

Legal System Changes

The home secretary also plans to terminate the process of allowing numerous reviews in protection claims and substituting it with a comprehensive assessment where every argument must be raised at once.

A recently established appeals body will be established, staffed by qualified judges and backed by early legal advice.

To do this, the government will introduce a law to change how the family unity rights under Clause 8 of the European human rights charter is applied in asylum hearings.

Terminating Accommodation Assistance

The home secretary will revoke the statutory obligation to provide protection claimants with support, ending certain lodging and weekly pay.

Support would remain accessible for "persons without means" but will be denied from those with employment eligibility who decline to, and from people who commit offenses or resist deportation orders.

Those who "purposefully render themselves penniless" will also be denied support.

As per the scheme, asylum seekers with assets will be compelled to help pay for the expense of their lodging.
