Keith Baker and Keith Baker Are Teaching Sessions at Dungeon Master University

Since 2018, Tabletop Vacations has been organizing immersive events where expert DMs manage Dungeons & Dragons games in old manors in Britain and at Landoll’s Mohican Castle. These all-inclusive trips are widely appreciated among long-time dungeon masters who seldom have the opportunity to join in the game themselves, and they often look for guidance from experts on topics ranging from spontaneous storytelling and puzzle design to handling difficult situations at the table.

In response, the coordinators began crafting a organized method to answer these inquiries, which led to the founding of the Dungeon Master Academy. The first session is set for the start of 2026 at an Atlanta campus.

“You can watch thousands of YouTube videos on virtually any subject and acquire valuable insights, but the philosophy was that there’s just no substitute face-to-face interaction in the company of fellow DMs, where real-time interaction with expert teachers and other game masters likely in comparable situations and seek to enhance their abilities,” explained the dean of Dungeon Master University.

Workshop Options and Ticket Packages

Dungeon Masters can select packages ranging from just under $1,000 to $2.5K, according to the degree of interaction they desire with the instructors. The entry-level option includes a choice of four workshops:

  • Foundational Skills: Covers the essentials of leading a game.
  • Campaign Building: Centers on building persistent adventures.
  • Universe Design: Emphasizes the development of worlds.
  • Industry Advancement: Designed for dungeon masters who aim to explore more about the gaming industry.

Each course includes multiple sessions of training spread over two days.

“The workshops are structured so that you leave with usable skills, increased self-assurance, and numerous applicable methods,” Carl noted. “They’re not just lectures and they’re not just static videos. These workshops that you can participate in, absorb insights from, and then return to your group the next week and implement in your local game.”

Professional Teachers

The majority of workshops are taught by a pair of experts. Universe creation is taught by Monte Cook and a renowned campaign designer, both teaching the art of worldbuilding.

Professional development features several experts, such as Elisa Teague, a podcast co-host, and Hunter Fell. The extra instructors is intended to deliver focused advice to attendees with specific goals.

“Some of them plan to create their own live gameplay show and share their stories with the world, some of them plan to produce and write original content,” Carl stated. “Some just want to ask, How do I get to be a DM at something like an immersive experience? What capabilities that I need? Is this achievable?

Advanced Options

A $1,500 gold tier provides access to a welcome reception, a starter kit, and a brief one-on-one appointment with a teacher. This marks the first Dungeon Master Academy, though the company has previously run comparable workshops during breaks between campaigns at their immersive experiences.

“It would be possible to organize an complete event just on one-on-one meetings for expert DMs,” Carl said. “I don’t know if that’s the best use of each attendee's hours – In my opinion the coursework and the practical exercises is extremely important – but I suspect it’s going to be one of the most popular parts of the program.”

The twenty-five hundred dollar top package includes an 60-minute private session and the chance to lead a session for several participants plus an instructor, who will then provide notes and instruction.

“The aim is for the teacher to review whichever aspect is interested in: I struggle with spontaneous decisions or I encounter obstacles in certain battle scenarios. Could I demonstrate a scene for you and get feedback on where I excel and need improvement?” Carl detailed. “Perhaps they want to obtain critique and advice on a definite universe that they’ve been developing.”

Coming Developments

Input from the first event will help guide subsequent DMU events. Carl mentioned that likely modifications could include increasing consultation time, extending the program to a longer period, or experimenting with varied class arrangements.

“I expect that we conduct these frequently,” Carl expressed. “I would love to see multiple Dungeon Master Universities in a given year, in different cities, and in multiple countries. The response has been overwhelmingly favorable. We're extremely satisfied with current developments and I feel it would be amazing to be able to do this in partnership with large gatherings.”
