Cameron Norrie secured the most important win of his professional journey by rallying from a early deficit to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the Paris Masters.

While he had earlier overcome Alcaraz on two separate matches, this win signifies Norrie's initial victory over a reigning world number one.

"Enormous. So big for me," commented Norrie, who is now the latest English competitor in history to defeat a world No 1. "Coming back from health issues last year, I lost in the first round of qualifying rounds here. I just tried to appreciate my tennis in the second half of the year. To achieve a victory like this, it's the most significant win of my tennis journey, my first win over the top player and likely the most confident athlete in the world right now."

Norrie, ranked No 31, also halted Alcaraz's supreme streak of nine straight final appearances and 17 straight elite tournament wins, which represented the finest stretch of performances in the Spanish star's young career.

Contest Analysis

Alcaraz appeared to be moving confidently towards victory at the start as he cruised through the opening set. Yet, the British contender slowly battled back into the match by executing with improved accuracy and dragging the Spanish opponent into lengthy, physical rallies. His relentless consistency and dependability slowly left its mark.

For much of the match, Alcaraz delivered strong serves but he had difficulty to get his timing right on his baseline shots. The rising talent appeared particularly uncomfortable striking his signature shot, which has been the best shot in the game for most of this year, haemorrhaging 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a total of 54 unforced errors. On the other side, the British player gave Alcaraz so few mistakes, maintaining his steadiness, physicality and penetration all match while performing well on serve and picking his spots to advance forward and attack well.

After battling for an extended period due to a significant left forearm injury and difficulties with his game, Norrie slipped as far down as No 91 this year. Having reached the last eight at the grass-court major and the French Open second week since then, this win further underlines the experienced player's improvement as he attempts to return to the top 20 and further. The Spanish sensation, notwithstanding his extraordinary achievements, is yet to solve how to display his finest performance in indoor conditions.
