Arrangements for Trump-Putin Summit Postponed Days Following Budapest Talks Announced

Currently exist "no plans" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has stated.

Recently the US president indicated he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Budapest soon to examine the ongoing hostilities.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration clarified the two had had a "productive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was not "necessary".

The White House did not share any more details on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Earlier Events

Trump had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit via telephone with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports suggested his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with sources indicating the president had pressured him to cede extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Russia.

However, on Monday the American president endorsed a peace initiative endorsed by Kyiv and EU officials to freeze the conflict on the present positions.

"Let it be cut the way it is," he stated.

Russia has frequently resisted against halting the current line of contact.

Moscow was solely focused on "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister commented on this week, implying that pausing conflict would simply constitute a brief pause.

Political Perspectives

The "root causes" of the hostilities demanded attention, Lavrov stated, using Kremlin shorthand for a series of extensive requirements that involve the recognition of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of the country – a non-starter for Ukraine and its European partners.

Zelensky commented discussions about the current lines were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to avoid diplomacy.

He also said the only topic that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the supply of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Weapons Discussions

Putin's spontaneous discussion with Trump recently came ahead of speculation that the US was planning to provide extended-range cruise missiles to Ukraine that could potentially strike deep into Russia.

Zelensky said it was the missile discussion that had pressured the Kremlin to participate in talks. The talk about the missiles had turned out to be a "valuable contribution" in diplomacy", he commented.
